The difference between UNinsured and UNDERinsured.

Alvine Weidenaar, Personal Injury

Often insurance terms sound complicated when they are actually quite simple.

One big point of confusion is between UNinsured motors and UNDERinsured motorists.

UNinsured motorist insurance is insurance that protects you in case you are injured by someone who has no insurance. They’re called uninsured. If you’re injured by a person who’s uninsured, you can actually collect damages that you’ve incurred from the accident from your own insurance company.

For example, if you’re involved in a serious accident and the person who hurt you has no insurance, you can collect up to the policy limits that you have. If you hadn’t had a policy of a hundred thousand dollars, you can under your own company, compensate your lost wages and medical bills.

UNDERinsured insurance is similar. However, in an underinsured motorist case, the person who hurt you actually has a policy of insurance, but the policy of insurance is not enough to compensate you for all your damages.

For example, if a person who injured you has a policy only $25,000, and you have a policy of up to a hundred thousand dollars, you can then collect up to a hundred thousand dollars from your own insurance company to compensate you for your loss. It’s very important that you have adequate underinsured and uninsured insurance.

Call your insurance agent today and ask them what coverage do you have under your policy for uninsured underinsured motorist coverage.
